Beginner guide
Open your first card
Choose File, then Open, and select a card file. ePSXe keeps cards in memcards\epsxe000.mcr, and DuckStation uses memcards\shared_card_1.mcd by default. The window lists each save with its slot, icon, title, product code, region and size in blocks.
Copy saves between cards
Open both cards; each appears in its own tab. Select a save, copy it, switch to the other tab, and paste into free space. A save needs as many free blocks as it uses on the original card.
Save safely
Use Save As with a new file name the first time, so the original card stays untouched until you have tested the result in your emulator.
Advanced guide
Convert to another format
Open the card and choose Save As. Pick the target type, such as PSP virtual Memory Card (.VMP), PS3 virtual Memory Card (.VM1), RetroArch (.srm), POPStarter (.VMC) or MiSTer (.sav). See format conversion.
Work with real cards
Choose your reader and COM port in Options, then Preferences. MemcardRex supports DexDrive, MemCARDuino, PS1CardLink, Unirom and the PS3 Memory Card Adaptor. Read the card into a tab, save a backup, then edit. See reading real cards.
Single saves and plugins
Export one save as .mcs, .psx, .ps1, .mcb, .mcx, .psv or raw data, and import such files into any card. Third-party save editors can plug in for game-specific editing.
Best practices
- Back up the card file before every session.
- Keep regions consistent: PAL, NTSC-U and NTSC-J versions of a game usually use different product codes.
- Test edited cards in an emulator before writing them to a physical card.
- Keep a copy of the MemcardRex release you rely on, since the project is archived.
Tips and keyboard shortcuts
Use the undo history to step back several changes at once. Every menu shows the keyboard shortcut beside each command, which is the most reliable reference for your build. Restoring a deleted save works only until something else is written over its blocks, so restore early.
